Equipment
Your feet do most of the work on your walk, so good footwear is essential. Never set out in brand-new boots you have not worn in. The choice is personal: low-cut, mid-cut or high-cut. Choose boots with good grip and waterproofing.
Pack good walking socks, and bring several pairs.
Good to know:
- Try boots on in the evening, when your feet are slightly swollen.
- Consider specialist insoles that absorb shock.
The essentials:
- Good walking boots.
- A windproof jacket or rain cape, or a Gore-Tex jacket (waterproof and breathable).
- A headband for your ears (in cooler regions) and gloves (even in summer).
- A mobile phone.
- A fleece or warm jumper.
- Toilet paper or tissues.
- A water bottle, preferably aluminium.
Help keep the trail clean:
Carry a small rubbish bag with you and take your litter to the next village. Please do not leave any paper or tissues on the paths or in the undergrowth. A small plastic bag is all you need, and you can throw it away in a bin at your evening stop.
Optional extras:
- Telescopic walking poles.
- Binoculars.
- A camera.
Your rucksack:
- Have your rucksack fitted in the shop.
- Choose a waterproof rucksack, or one with a rain cover.
- Capacity: 30 to 35 litres.
- A chest strap is very useful for balance.
- Side pockets are handy for sunglasses, a cap, tissues and other small items.
